WE’RE SITTING OURSELVES TO DEATH (But We Can Fix It with Two Simple Moves)

WE’RE SITTING OURSELVES TO DEATH (But We Can Fix It with Two Simple Moves)

In our modern, technology-driven world, it's no secret that many of us spend the majority of our days sitting. Whether it's at our desks, in front of the TV, or during our daily commute, the average person spends a tremendous amount of time sitting down. But what are the consequences of this?

According to recent studies, the average person sits for a staggering 10 hours a day (not including sleeping). This excessive sitting has been linked to a myriad of health problems, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even early death.  As Dr. James Levine, director of the Mayo Clinic-Arizona State University Obesity Solutions Initiative, warns, "Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV, and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death."

Moreover, our sitting habit knows no bounds. From our desks at work to our couches at home, and even in our cars, we are constantly finding ways to sit. Dr. Camelia Davtyan, associate professor of clinical preventive medicine at the University of Southern California, highlights the ubiquity of our sitting behavior: "We sit in front of the TV, sit at work, sit in front of the computer and phones at home, sit to drive, sit to eat. That's a lot of sitting!"

But there is an antidote to this epidemic, and it can be found in two very simple movements that you can do in 10 minutes.  The first movement is a stretch designed to counter the ‘muscle shortening effect’ that comes from hunching and sitting.  The second is a strength and activation movement that turns on your back muscles keeping you in a tall upright posture.  Drumroll…….Here they are:

The Corefirst Chest Stretch targets the identical muscles that shorten while sitting including your shoulders, hips, hamstrings, and of course, your chest.  The Corefirst Standing Plank turns on and strengthens the exact muscles that ‘turn off’ while sitting…the upper and lower back, rear shoulders, glutes, hamstrings, and calves.  It’s not widely known, but long periods of constant sitting can actually start to prevent muscles from turning on when you move, which is another reason why people end up overusing muscles like the back and experience back pain.

“You’ll be blown away at the impact it will have on your life if you just do this…,” says Jeff Huling, Co-founder of Corefirst, “Stretch what you can see in the mirror, and strengthen what you can’t see and do it for 10 minutes every few hours to break up the sitting.” Failure to address the sitting epidemic comes with significant risks and costs. From declining physical health to increased healthcare expenses, the consequences of our sitting lifestyles are not only costly but also prevent us from living our best life.
